Such as a sweet Donkey Kong Arcade border. So when DK94 was played on a Super Gameboy, it got a slight color upgrade as well as some cool borders. This was an add-on for the Super Nintendo that allowed Gameboy games to be played on the big screen.

I should also mention that DK94 was created with the Super Gameboy in mind. This was the game that also introduced a lot of Mario’s signature acrobatics that he would later take with him when he went 3D. Though it is kind of basic, the animations are great and it’s bursting with charm. It’s just a really fun game that still holds up today. Though the game might sport 97 levels, it never gets long or tedious. The game is constantly introducing new gameplay elements, moves and challenges that constantly mix up the gameplay. Something that tends to be easier said than done. In most levels, the goal is to make your way to a key and try to get it to the exit. Rather than being a straightforward linear platformer, the game is more of a puzzle platformer. The game also takes an interesting approach to gameplay. It’s one of the greatest baits and switches in all of gaming. The game then shifts gears and becomes something else completely as you play through 97 new levels. However, when you get to where the old Arcade game ends, DK gets back up, takes back Pauline and heads off to cause more trouble. A broken one that you can finish is less than five minutes given that the controls are so much better and Mario has so many new movement options. So when you first start playing Donkey Kong 94, you’d be forgiven for thinking that it’s just a remake of the arcade game. It’s a shame though because Donkey Kong 94 is fantastic and is probably my favorite game on the console. Sadly, the game fell by the wayside because the game just didn’t match up with what the brand was at the time. In other words, Donkey Kong was back on top so Nintendo decided to release a remake of the Arcade Classic. At this point, Donkey Kong Country had been released and was setting the sales charts on fire.

Anyway, Donkey Kong 94 was released during an interesting period in DK’s history. Yeah I know the title card just says Donkey Kong but just to make sure things stay clear, I’ve opted to call this one Donkey Kong 94.
